In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the Gods grew so tired of the noise of humanity, they sent a flood to wipe us out.
No doubt, today’s world is getting louder. Even if The Covid-19 quarantines did bring a temporary relief from the cacophony, the future of modern life seems inevitable: more cars on the road, more planes in the skies and more than ever buzzing electronics.
However, there exists a different kind of noise too – internalnoise. With so much stimulus demanding our attention, it’s harder to find silence inside our consciousness. With the increased number of incoming calls, emails and texts, comes the expectation to always be ready to respond and react.
Imagine your mind as a lake and each notification as raindrops hitting that lake. The stimulus and information overload make it tough to focus, appreciate the present, and simply be. There are ways to rediscover silence in the noisy world, such as mindfulness meditation, seeking out of the quiet havens, and last but not least digital detox.
With these ways, silence may be seen as powerful way to understand things better and become more aware. We need to rise above the noise to endure the value of what is important and without all the distractions.
