Had we been a mountain, we wouldn’t move! Had we been a feather in vacuum, we wouldn’t fall! But this constant beating of heart reminds us that we are meant to be different.  We’re a figment of emotions, built inside us, not only as a result of our actions, but also because of others’ presence around us and influence on us. The churn of emotions, hit us hard, bringing the tides of high and low. And while we are able to deal well with the highs, in lows we feel solitude encompassing us, throwing us into a web of negative thoughts.

This gives rise to the concept of emotional quotient (EQ), or what we call emotional intelligence. EQ is the ability of a person to understand and manage the emotions of oneself and of others. EQ is still a nascent concept when compared to Intelligence Quotient (IQ). In times where our lives our becoming more complex every coming day and our relationships with our family, friends, co-workers are getting highly affected due to ever changing life-styles, it is imperative to stress upon the need to have a high EQ. This would help make lives less distressing.

Since emotional intelligence affects our physical health, mental health, our performance at school or work and our relationships with others, we must pay attention to better our emotional skills every day.

Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management are different attributes of EQ. To be cognizant of our emotions, whether evident in our actions or deeply suppressed in our hearts, by the means of introspection; to be able to manage them in a healthy way by being involved in constructive activities; being aware of our surroundings and understanding the emotional ups and downs of others by being empathetic; and finally fostering healthy relationships with others by means of effective communication are things that can be done to move up the ladder of EQ.

It’s also a matter of perception. To have a positive outlook on life, and not be let down by the unfortunate events can spread positive vibes around.

As is said by Eric Jensen- “There is no separation of mind and emotions; emotions, thinking, and learning are all linked”.
