The debate between maintenance of work-life balance might oscillate between myth and reality, but most professionals would acknowledge that stress is anything but illusory. According to medical research, stress is defined as the body’s reaction to harmful situations whether they’re real or perceived. Although one of the integral factors that ensured survival during the early years of mankind on earth, recent scientific studies show that stress kills brain cells, which require a calm environment for their growth. Stress is also associated with loss of immunity, unanticipated aggression, depression and anxiety. Surviving in a highly competitive environment has led to students becoming more and more exposed and susceptible to stress. Hence, it becomes imperative for a person to manage stress effectively and efficiently in order to thrive in such a setting.

According to physicians, the best way to combat the effects of stress is through exercise. Exercise and other physical activities produce endorphins which are chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress. Studies show that exercise is very effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and at enhancing overall cognitive function. Activities such as running, yoga, swimming, etc will not only help you stay fit physically, but mentally as well.

Other methods of combating stress includes eating healthy food, and above all, maintaining a disciplined lifestyle. This relates to managing time efficiently, regulating the sleep-wake cycles effectively and ensuring consumption of food at regular periods of time.
